Adopt-a-Grave

The American Legion Post BE02 implemented in 2014 an adoption program for the graves of World War I American soldiers at the Flanders Field American Cemetery. The program kicked off in April 2014, after a visit to the cemetery by President Barack Obama.

Each of the 368 graves, and 43 names from the Wall of Missing, has a volunteer who has agreed to visit the grave regularly and place flowers for Memorial Day and Remembrance (Veterans) Day.

Most adopters received their Certificate of Adoption on August 16, 2014 during a very special ceremony at Flanders Field American Cemetery. More than 400 adopters, family members and friends were part of the ceremony. Honorable Denise Campbell Bauer, Ambassador of the United States of America to the Kingdom of Belgium spoke and presented the mayor of nearby Waregem with his Certificate of Adoption.

Information about the Adopt-a-Grave program and an application form can be found on the website of the American Legion Post BE02 website.
